The Hickory Mountain Weavery started as a yarn store in 1984 in Pittsboro, NC. I rented a room in the upstairs of the newly renovated Blair Hotel on the circle in the heart of town. I was hoping to share my love of yarn and weaving with the community, but it was also a personal refuge from the challenges of my workaday life. Not only was I surrounded by the colors and textures that I loved, The Weavery also became a gathering place for friends and students who came to learn a new craft and spend a few hours each week away from their daily lives.

While The Weavery has gone through a number of changes over the years, gathering friends for teaching and learning is still the primary focus. In 1986, I met, and later married, one of my weaving students, the late Greg Talbott. During the day he worked as an industrial mechanic, but his passions were history and wood. He combined these loves in a number of ways, studying the old ways of working wood, turning bowls and making needlework tools, and rescuing old log farm buildings from destruction. When we moved into the old house near Siler City, which is still our family home, The Weavery moved with us, becoming a production hand weaving studio and mail order business while I raised our children.

Greg was killed in a workplace accident in 2005. Change came again to The Weavery. Unable to maintain our home business without him, I returned to school and the workplace, but committed to finishing the work he began on the buildings he'd rescued and find a way to share them with the community that has so generously befriended us. The buildings are finished now, and The Weavery has come full circle, returning to it's original role as a teaching/learning/gathering place for friends, artists and craftsmen in the community.

So come join us, to teach or to learn or to plan your event. Check the calendar, check out the class descriptions, enjoy the history of the old buildings here. To register for classes, sign up for our newsletter or just ask a question, you can contact The Weavery at:
